Hey Bill, it sounds like you might have measured from the top of the bed rails to the ground and not the truck bed. 5 inches is pretty normal between the bed rail and king pin plate so what you should do is measure from the bed floor of your truck bed down to the ground and then take the difference of that and the king pin dimension you took That will be the correct height setting to use for the 5th wheel hitch. view full answer...

What is the bed length of your truck? If you have a long bed, clearance will not be an issue. Short bed trucks are where you can run into potential clearance issues. I would expect the eye to eye measurement to be shorter when you take the weight off of the leaf spring. It is hard to say how much shorter but 3/4" is certainly possible. Even if you remove the weight it will be longer than it was originally since they wear out over time so you need to account for that.
